What a journey started from The ‘Dam to Berlin riding the 200km Euro train entering Munich and Stuttgart. September 2002 could not be better weather for the 18 days.

InterCityHotel Berlin Ostbahnhof

is the location of this piece of history of what a wall divided a country still stands.

Music and Art still can bring the meek ones to those locations on Earth .

Without an itinerary planner was the case of this adventure to only result in a never repeatable feat. Yes, this was dangerous and educational.

Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands, as well probably most people. Could it not be any better for us to see this mural, without the knowledge of the location or whereabouts of this incredible gem.

What a find in my lifetime.

Thank goodness for ice cream Lenny.

Soulstorm

Musician

Soulstorm was formed in May of 1991 by Nick Sagias (Bass/Vocals). Nick had just disbanded his previous band Overthrow and played in Holland’s Pestilence before realizing he needed to do something new and exciting. Soulstorm were one of the early underground pioneers in a wave of death metal with industrial overtones, sounding like a cross between Godflesh, Swans, Celtic Frost and Obituary.

As the band gathered steam, they recorded what would be their first bit of exposure, the “Control” demo (Epidemic, 1991). Four crushing songs, sounding like no other, quickly established the band as a force in the extreme metal music scene. It was at this point in time that Soulstorm was ready to release a full-length debut CD that came in the form of the highly acclaimed “Darkness Visible” (Metal Blade/Music For Nations/Epidemic) CD in 1992. Soulstorm then released their first video for the song “Disruption”, which was directed by Andrew Hunt (Sweet Karma) and was nominated for a Much Music Video Award for Best Metal Video in 1993. Many impressive live shows followed such as opening for Entombed, KMFDM, Cannibal Corpse, Grave, U.S.S.A., Malhavoc, Suffocation, Clutch, Cancer, Massacre and Milwaukee Metalfest 93 as well as touring the United States and Canada with Sacrifice, Thought Industry and Genitorturers.

In late 1993, Nick took a new approach and re-invented the bands sound with a new touring line-up, touring across Canada with Juno award winners Monster Voodoo Machine and releasing a second full length CD, “From Euphoria To Paranoia” (Cargo, 1994). After taking 1996 off, the “F.E.T.P.” line-up got back together, stripped down the sound of the band and released the “Under The Killing Sun” CD to a limited run of 1000 copies.

At the end of December 1999, Soulstorm called it quits and Nick Sagias put music on hold for the next 5 years, recording only once during that time. On and off from 2006 to 2011, Nick started laying down the foundations of Soulstorm’s 3rd full-length CD until 2011 when Sagias properly began work on “Fall Of The Rebel Angels”, which contains guest vocals and guitar by Sacrifice’s Rob Urbinati.

28893_photo 350323The return of Soulstorm and CD release show for “Fall Of The Rebel Angels” came as a co-headlining sold out show with New York’s Hanzel Und Gretyl, to a viciously great response to the new line up of guitarists Ryan Hawes (Nailed, Daedalus Project) and Kevin DeWilde (Nailed, Daedalus Project) as well as the return of “Darkness Visible” drummer, Patrick Harquail (Nailed, Daedalus Project). The dedication and live fury of these metal veterans really showcase how deadly a live band Soulstorm is.

WORLD WAR III FESTIVAL

Media from Montreal had heard the news.

Word on the streets was announced that a couple of Torontonians, actually a bunch of us, decided to take a Greyhound bus and venture to this first Heavy Metal Festival in Quebec. So, what happened could never be repeated. Once again, how fortunate of me and a few gentlemen we bumped along the way, had the opportunity to meet these great bands coming to Canada for their very first time. Are duty was to get some interviews for a fanzine named Brutal Torture, from Toronto.

First, Mario and I meet some local headbangers and were hospitable. Bottles wrapped in brown paper bags were passed along to keep us warm from the November coldness.

Then we meet Shaun (Terminal Death), Seth and Dan from Chicago. They were happy to hear about our mission and generously agreed to give us shelter for the evening.

Along the way, we bump into Martin and Tom from Celtic Frost. We asked and were invited up to their hotel room for the interview, that lasted over an hour!

An hour or so that will never be forgotten in our lives for most of the ones attending. You guys know who you are!

Destuction was next.

I got the job done in the roller rink venue with Tommy answering for the most part, as his engrish was still choppy. I got the first one before the Montreal media this time, as they wait with their cameras and TV lights ready to pounce. We were given the red carpet treatment! Thank you Montreal!!!

Nasty Savage next.

Ronnie, the TV head smasher was also very kind to allow us in their room. With many other musicians from America also took the trip up. As I said, first time to North America and the American bands, their first to Canadian soil.

Members of Overkill, At War and others were present. Even though, I said lets interview all of them. I knew then, how some of this will be recognized as a historical moment.

Dusk ’til Dawn we continued along.

Possessed was the finale.

Larry Lalonde was highly respected as a great guitarist. I was fortunate to get the one on one with him. I like to thank Larry’s mother for that. Jeff was busy being interviewed by media. So the other boys, the 2 Mike’s happened to befriend our Chicago mates and got drunk off of our 12 pack Molson Canadians. Wasted!

The evening came to an end with French girls in the bathtub, Windowpane sheet in the secret shoe compartment and lots of blunts.

Unfortunately, we never got the Voivod interview.
